The King & Queen of the Ring tournament is set to take place in Saudi Arabia in less than two weeks. Recently, Kofi Kingston broke his silence after failing to qualify for the tournament. The Kingster has been primarily in the tag team division alongside Big E and Xavier Woods following the end of KofiMania at the hands of Brock Lesnar. After Big E suffered an injury, Kingston and Woods switched brands and won the NXT Tag Team Championships.
Kofi discussed about his recent defeat
On the most recent episode of Monday Night Raw, Kingston faced Gunther in the quarter-finals of the King of the Ring tournament. Kofi ultimately lost and Gunther advanced to the semi-finals. He spoke to WWE Digital recently and talked about his defeat and also discussed the challenges of facing the former Intercontinental Champion.
“I knew I was going to go to war with someone like Gunther tonight. I mean, he’ll probably go down as one of the greatest Intercontinental Champions of all time. I don’t usually like to win matches by countout, but if you have the opportunity to beat Gunther, you take it. If you have an opportunity to advance in the King of the Ring, you take it. As close as it was, I really wanted to do it for Woods, felt like I let him down.”
The King of the Ring tournament was brought back this year
The King of the Ring tournament was canceled in May 2023, but WWE brought it back. Earlier this year, the Stamford-based promotion announced the return of the event in May 2024 and released the tournament brackets following Backlash in France. Many matches were initially scheduled for weekly shows but were later shifted to live events.

Kingston faced Rey Mysterio before Gunther and qualified for the second round. After his win over “The Master of the 619,” Kofi also shared an emotional moment with the veteran in the ring. It was the first time the two high-flyers faced each other in a one-on-one clash. Ultimately, the New Day member advanced to the quarter-finals and most recently lost to the iconic former Intercontinental champion. On the other hand, LA Knight, Shayna Bazler and Tiffany Stratton advanced in their respective tournaments.
