In the wrestling world, retirement is something that doesn’t hold much importance. Even if a wrestler is retired but still capable of getting into the ring without assistance, there is almost always a chance they can wrestle again. However, Stone Cold Steve Austin feels like an exception to that rule. That was until WrestleMania 38, when, for the first time since he silently retired after losing to The Rock at WrestleMania 19, he competed in a match, scoring a win over Kevin Owens.
Austin about wrestling matches in future
Recently, an episode of A&E Biography: Legends covered Austin’s life and career and was aired over the weekend, during which Stone Cold was asked if he plans to wrestle again. Despite how good his return match with KO was, it doesn’t seem like Austin has any intentions of wrestling again. He said, “I’m happy with what I did, and there are people who have done more and lasted longer. I had a pretty good run and I’m pretty happy with it. So, I ain’t got nothing to prove to anyone.”
Austin’s point is that there are people who have done more, lasted longer and are worth thinking about. Steve Austin is considered one of the best performers of all time. However, he shined so much in WWE that fans often forget how short his run at the top was compared to the time others wrestled in the company.
From Austin’s iconic King of the Ring promo, which catapulted him into the company’s top tier, to his final match at WrestleMania 19, it covered a period of less than seven years. During all these years, WWE was at its peak and Austin was the main reason for that. Although Austin has said that he has nothing to prove, if he does come to wrestle again, the hype surrounding him will definitely be the same.
We might see Austin again in the WWE ring
Keeping all this aside, if WWE fans rewind to the last 10 minutes of WrestleMania 40, they will definitely agree that Steve Austin’s involvement in that epic Rhodes vs. Reigns match would have made it even better. John Cena rushing to the ring and The Undertaker’s iconic bell ring resulted in a huge reaction from the crowd, but if Austin’s glass breaking would have been there, it would have been more epic. The Rock is currently on hiatus but he promised to come back, so the fans might get to see Austin and The Rock again in the ring some day. Austin may never wrestle again, but he will always be ready to hit the odd Stunner.
