The highly anticipated rematch between boxing icons Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk is set to be held on December 21, 2024 and the purses for each fighter have recently been revealed. This second clash between the giants promises to be an even more spectacular spectacle after a thrilling encounter on May 18, where Usyk scored a split decision win after 12 rounds. That bout had a combined purse of around $150 million. “The Gypsy King” won the mid-rounds with uppercuts before the Ukrainian nearly knocked him out in the eighth and ninth rounds. Despite the terrific battle, a rematch clause in their contract ensured a second showdown.
Saudi Boxing Kingmaker made the big announcement
Initially the rematch was set for October, but both fighters required a long recovery period due to the intense nature of their previous clash. In addition, the commercial success of their first fight encouraged long preparations to maximize the impact of the event. Saudi boxing kingmaker Turki Alalshikh announced the new date, emphasizing the magnificence of the rematch and said, “The world will witness another historic bout. Our commitment to boxing fans continues. We hope you enjoy it.” Turki hinted at an even more grand evening and promised an enhanced undercard.
The rematch has much higher stakes
The stakes of the fight are higher this time. Fury reportedly earned around $100 million for the initial fight. “The Cat” took around $38 million. The rematch purse is set to jump, with a massive $190 million expected to be split between the two fighters. As the new undisputed champion, Usyk will have the lion’s share. Last year, a bout between the two men couldn’t come to fruition after Fury offered Usyk a low price, leaving boxing fans angry. The fans can expect another unforgettable clash as the two heavyweights prepare to face each other again and make history. However, Fury may not get the opportunity to become the undisputed champ as the Ukrainian will be stripped of his IBF title due to a mandatory obligation.
