# 4. Anil Kumble (619)
Anil Kumble’s style of leg-spin might not have been the most aesthetically pleasing, but no one can argue that it was not effective. The numbers speak for themselves – 619 wickets in 132 Tests was the third-highest tally in cricket history when he retired from the five-day format in 2008. He formed an extremely effective spin duo with Harbhajan Singh for large parts of his career and was responsible for some notable successes for India in Test cricket.
Despite relying more on unsettling speed and unerring accuracy, Kumble ended his career with almost every Indian bowling record in his possession, including an iconic 10-wicket haul against Pakistan in Delhi in 1999. His determination was second to none, as evidenced by a highly gritty spell of bowling against West Indies in Antigua in 2002 when he bowled with a bandage holding his fractured jaw in place. He also served as India’s Test captain with some success, but perhaps his most cherished achievement was his 110* against England at The Oval in 2007, his maiden (and only) Test ton.
