Heidenheim vs Werder Bremen: Preview
Heidenheim form analysis
Newly promoted club Heidenheim’s season began with a 0-2 home loss to Wolfsburg in the German Cup first round. Goals in each half from Wind saw Heidenheim start on the wrong foot under new coach Thomas Letsch.
However, they bounced back with an impressive 2-0 first half lead at home to Hoffenheim in the next round before collapsing late on to lose 2-3 after being ahead with just 10 minutes left.
Most recently, Heidenheim claimed a creditable 2-2 draw away at Champions League-chasing Borussia Dortmund in the league. They led twice through Dinkci and a Kleindienst penalty before being pegged back on both occasions.
Overall, it’s been a mixed but encouraging start for Heidenheim on their return to the Bundesliga. Despite narrow cup defeats, they have shown they can compete well against top flight opposition. Building on these performances could be key in their bid to avoid relegation back into the second division at the end of this season.
Werder Bremen form analysis
Werder began this season with a disappointing 0-4 home thrashing by champions Bayern Munich on the opening weekend. Second half goals from new signing Kane, Sane’s brace and youngster Tel saw Werder comprehensively beaten.
They followed this up with another home defeat, losing 0-1 to Champions League-chasing Freiburg after conceding late to Max Philipp’s superb strike.
However, Werder did respond strongly last time out by beating Mainz convincingly 4-0 at home. Ducksch scored a penalty before second half goals from Stage, Bittencourt and Njinmah secured an emphatic first victory.
Overall, it’s been a mixed return to the Bundesliga for Werder after promotion. Heavy defeats in their first two games highlighted the step up in quality. But the talented squad showed their potential by bouncing back against Mainz. Building confidence and momentum now is key.
