Heidenheim vs Freiburg: Preview
Heidenheim form analysis
The club has shown some positive form recently, despite tough matches against top Bundesliga opposition. On November 11th, they scored twice against champions Bayern Munich through Kleindienst and Beste but ultimately lost 4-2 in an entertaining match. Heidenheim then ground out a hard-fought 0-0 draw away at Bochum on November 26th to stop the rot. However, their defense was breached twice in a 2-1 loss away at RB Leipzig on December 2nd, with Gimber’s 45th minute strike a mere consolation. Heidenheim bounced back well in their next match on December 9th with an exciting 3-2 home win against Darmstadt, thanks to goals from Schöppner, Mainka (2) overturning Darmstadt’s brief lead through Skarke and an own goal.
Most recently on December 16th, Heidenheim earned an excellent 1-0 away victory over Mainz courtesy of a 12th minute goal from Pieringer. Overall, it’s been a mixed bag recently for Heidenheim as they’ve struggled against the Bundesliga’s best teams Bayern and Leipzig but shown capability of getting results against mid-table opposition. Scoring goals hasn’t been an issue with tall target man Kleindienst supported by pacy wingers Beste and Gimber. However, tightening up defensively could be key if they are to push for better things this season.
Freiburg form analysis
Freiburg had been in excellent form leading up to a tough match away at RB Leipzig on November 13th, where they ultimately fell to a 3-1 defeat despite Röhl equalizing right on halftime. They bounced back quickly by grinding out a 1-1 home draw against a stubborn Darmstadt side on November 25th, with Höler canceling out Honsak’s early opener for Darmstadt. Freiburg then travelled to Mainz on December 3rd and returned to winning ways with a hard-fought 0-1 victory thanks to Gregoritsch’s 69th minute strike.
They followed that up with another 1-0 away win against Wolfsburg on December 9th courtesy of another Gregoritsch goal in the 74th minute. Most recently at home against FC Cologne on December 17th, Freiburg prevailed 2-0 with Gregoritsch again on target in the 72nd minute before Sallai wrapped up the win in added time. Overall, Freiburg have shown capability to grind out narrow wins recently, with striker Gregoritsch in excellent goalscoring form. Despite the loss at Leipzig, they have been defensively solid for most of their matches. However, their lack of squad depth may pose issues with a congested fixture schedule ahead, should injuries and suspensions come into play. Going forward, Freiburg look well set to maintain their surprise top half push this season if they can keep key players fit.
