Heidenheim vs FC Augsburg: Preview
Heidenheim form analysis
Frank Schmidt’s men have shown they can be competitive against top-flight opposition, but struggle for consistency in their recent matches. They started impressively by earning a 2-2 draw away at Borussia Dortmund, scoring through Dinkci and Kleindienst’s penalty. Heidenheim then beat Werder Bremen 4-2 at home as Kleindienst, Dinkci and Beste led a clinical performance. However, they were soundly beaten 1-4 by Leverkusen in their next game despite Dinkci pulling one back. A determined 1-0 cup win over Union Berlin followed thanks to a Beste goal. Most recently though, Heidenheim lost 0-2 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt as their mixed form continued.
Overall, Heidenheim have shown they have goals in them with Kleindienst, Dinkci and Beste impressing in attack. But they have struggled defensively against high quality opposition. If coach Frank Schmidt can improve their defensive solidity when facing the top teams, Heidenheim have enough attacking weapons to trouble most opponents. But establishing consistency and better organization against the elite teams will be key if they are to sustain an unlikely promotion push this season.
FC Augsburg form analysis
Augsburg’s recent Bundesliga matches highlight a club struggling for form and consistency. They started fairly well by twice coming from behind to draw 2-2 at home with Bochum, with Demirovic and Asano grabbing the goals. But that fighting spirit deserted them in a 0-3 home thrashing by RB Leipzig. Demirovic struck twice to beat Mainz 2-1 next up, before another home defeat followed against Freiburg by a 0-2 scoreline. Most recently, Augsburg lost 1-2 at home to high-flying Darmstadt despite Demirovic again scoring.
Overall, Augsburg’s defensive issues have been badly exposed over this period, conceding 2+ goals in every game. Going forward, their reliance on Demirovic for goals has been apparent with the Swiss striker netting 4 of their last 5. Improving their defensive solidarity is critical for Augsburg to pull away from another relegation scrap.
