Heidenheim vs Borussia Dortmund: Preview
Heidenheim form analysis
FC Heidenheim ended 2023 with a solid 0-1 away win at struggling Mainz thanks to Maurice Multhaup’s first half strike. They carried that form brilliantly by producing a shock 3-2 home win over Freiburg in a see-saw thriller that saw Heidenheim lead, trail and lead again before Freiburg’s Matthias Ginter scored a 90th minute own goal winner. The new year brought battling 1-1 draws at home to FC Cologne and away at Wolfsburg as Heidenheim continued proving tough to beat.
Most recently, they claimed a creditable 1-1 draw away at Hoffenheim as Denis Thomalla cancelled out Andrej Kramarić’s first half penalty. Overall, Heidenheim’s form paints the picture of an organized, spirited side punching above their weight and difficult to beat. Remaining tough to break down and clinical when chances fall their way, Heidenheim have every chance to continue pulling off surprise results in 2024. Exceeding expectations and targeting a top half finish look realistic aims.
Borussia Dortmund form analysis
Borussia Dortmund started slowly after the World Cup break, drawing 1-1 away to Augsburg despite taking an early lead through Demirovic. Dortmund then failed to capitalize on Brandt’s opener against Mainz, conceding a late equalizer to draw 1-1 at home. This slow restart raised concerns, but Dortmund responded emphatically with three commanding victories. They first went to Darmstadt and earned a comprehensive 3-0 win thanks to goals from Brandt, Reus, and Moukoko.
Dortmund then went to Cologne and again won decisively by a 4-0 scoreline, with Malen grabbing a brace after also scoring the opener. The home victory over Bochum was similarly dominant, with Dortmund leading 2-0 early on goals from Fullkrug. Although Bochum pulled one back temporary after the break, Fullkrug’s second penalty sealed a 3-1 win to make it three victories in a row. After some early struggles post-World Cup, Dortmund now seem to have hit their stride with recent big wins showcasing a lethal attack along with increased defensive stability.
