Indian team selection came under fire after including the world’s top-ranked T20I batter, Suryakumar Yadav. The right-handed batter has struggled in the One-Day International format. Many fans were unhappy since they expected Sanju Samson to be in the squad instead of him. Now, Harbhajan has backed Suryakumar’s selection in ODI World Cup squad.
Meanwhile, former Indian legend spinner Harbhajan Singh addressed the Suryakumar vs. Samson issue, stating that Suryakumar is a complete player and that the Indian team’s decision to select him ahead of Samson was correct. Harbhajan says that Samson lacks the middle-over game that Suryakumar possesses.
“I believe Suryakumar Yadav is a complete player. I don’t believe the selectors were harsh on Sanju Samson. Sanju is a very excellent player, a quality player, in my opinion. However, you can only choose fifteen players. However, selecting Suryakumar over Sanju is the correct decision. “Because the game that Suryakumar has in the middle over[s], I don’t think Sanju has that game,” Harbhajan was cited by Hindustan Times as stating.
Suryakumar Yadav in the ODI World Cup squad:
Harbhajan went on to say that Suryakumar has the ability to score big. On the other hand, given the type of cricket Samson plays, he may be out at any point. He stated that people should not forget Suryakumar’s performance in the shortest format because what he can do, not even Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, can do.
He further states, “Even he goes for big shots from the first ball, but Suryakumar’s dependability – he can score big. Sanju, in my opinion, plays the type of cricket where you have a lot of chances to get out. Whereas Suryakumar, I know a lot of people ask what he has done in ODIs, but what he has done in T20s If his innings are only going to be that long, I feel there isn’t a better player in India in that position than Suryakumar,”
Singh continues, “What he can do in that position, neither Virat [Kohli] nor Sanju nor Rohit Sharma can do. Because batting at [No.] 5-6 is a difficult job for him. What [MS] Dhoni did, what Yuvi [Yuvraj Singh] did,”
