Afghanistan defeated England by 29 runs in ODI World Cup 2023 Match
Afghanistan did the unexpected when they defeated World Champions England by 69 runs in a World Cup match at Arun Jaitley stadium on Sunday. Batting first Afghanistan could post just 284 runs. However, Afghan spinners then did the unexpected by wrapping England’s innings at 215 runs to script history.
It was never thought that a team like England would suffer a massive defeat at the hands of Afghanistan. Batting first Afghan opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz smashed 80 runs for 57 balls while his opening batter Zadran smashed 28 runs in the first wicket stand of 114 in 16 overs. Ikram Alikhil scored 58 off 66 balls while leg-spinner Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman contributed 23 and 28 respectively as Afghanistan recovered from 190 for six to post 284 runs on board.
In reply, England’s Harry Brook made a 61-ball 66 to keep England’s winning hopes alive. But eventually, they couldn’t face the lethal spin attack of Afghan bowlers led by Rashid Khan (3/37) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (3/51). Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman was awarded as player of the match for his match-winning efforts with both bat & ball. He then dedicated his award to the people of Afghanistan who have been affected by the earthquake.
