Gujarat Titans Find Replacement for Injured Mohammed Shami, Face Early Season Challenges
The Gujarat Titans have been dealt a blow with the injury absence of star fast bowler Mohammed Shami. However, they’ve moved swiftly to secure a like-for-like replacement, bringing in Sandeep Warrier.
Warrier, a 32-year-old pacer from Kerala who now plays for Tamil Nadu, has limited IPL experience with just five matches under his belt, all with the Kolkata Knight Riders between 2019 and 2021.
He’ll join a potent Titans bowling attack that includes Mohit Sharma, Josh Little, Umesh Yadav, Spencer Johnson, Kartik Tyagi, Darshan Nalkande, and Sushant Mishra.
Shami’s absence extends beyond the IPL. After undergoing successful ankle surgery in London following his impressive performance as India’s leading wicket-taker at the 2023 World Cup, he’ll also miss the upcoming T20 World Cup in June. His return is expected by late 2024.
Mohammed Shami recieved award by President of India
Mohammed Shami received the Arjuna Award from the President of India for his exceptional performance in cricket, particularly during the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2023. This prestigious award is a significant recognition of his achievements in the sport.
Shami, known for his outstanding bowling skills, emerged as the leading wicket-taker in the World Cup, showcasing remarkable talent and dedication to his craft.
The Arjuna Award is a highly esteemed honor in India, acknowledging athletes who have excelled in their respective fields over a period of time, demonstrating leadership, sportsmanship, and discipline.
The Titans will face further hurdles early in the season. Wicket-keeper batter Matthew Wade will miss their opening two matches due to his involvement in the Sheffield Shield final with Tasmania. Additionally, Jharkhand batsman Robin Minz is also doubtful for their initial fixtures.
Despite these setbacks, the Gujarat Titans, led by new captain Shubman Gill after Hardik Pandya’s departure to Mumbai Indians, will be looking to build on their impressive run as runners-up in 2023 and champions in 2022.
Their quest for a title defense gets underway on Sunday evening when they face their rivals, the Mumbai Indians, in a highly anticipated season opener.
