Glenn Maxwell Reflects on Gruesome Injury and Eyes Test Cricket Comeback
Australian cricket star Glenn Maxwell has revealed his harrowing journey through injury and recovery, as well as his enduring ambition to return to Test cricket. Maxwell, who has not donned the baggy green since 2017, shared his story ahead of the release of his autobiography The Showman, which delves into the highs and lows of his cricket career.
Maxwell’s career trajectory took a dramatic turn in 2022 during a friend’s birthday celebration, where an unexpected leg injury nearly shattered his cricketing dreams. A severe break left him grappling with both the physical and emotional tolls of his condition.
Maxwell disclosed that the severity of the injury initially took time to sink in, admitting he underestimated its impact. “It was something I wish hadn’t happened,” Maxwell shared in a recent interview with SEN Radio. “I thought I’d just broken my leg, and I’d be back running in three months. I was so naive.”
The injury was life-altering, with Maxwell admitting it was almost a “walking-ending” ordeal. Surgeons told him he was fortunate to avoid an even graver outcome, possibly even the loss of his foot. Maxwell said the next few days after learning the full extent of his injury were a “big shock.”
His journey to recovery, though, was marked by relentless effort and determination. Maxwell worked rigorously through rehabilitation, surprising medical staff with the speed at which he progressed. “Everyone was surprised that I was back running when I was,” he said. “I got super focused on what I needed to do, putting my heart and soul into my rehab.”
In less than three months, Maxwell defied expectations by setting a target to participate in the Big Bash League. Although he admits he may have been “naive again” in rushing his return, Maxwell’s determination allowed him to resume play in both One Day Internationals and T20 cricket for Australia, even starring in the T20 World Cup.
Now, as he prepares to release The Showman, Maxwell is considering his Test cricket future. Although he has only seven Test matches to his name, his desire to return remains strong.
Australian cricket coach Andrew McDonald has suggested that the all-rounder could be in line for a return to the red-ball format, especially on spinning wickets where his skills could prove invaluable.
Whether or not Maxwell secures a place in the Test team, his comeback story is already an inspiring one. For Maxwell, the experience has not only tested his physical limits but also taught him the value of resilience and focus in the face of adversity.
