Girona vs Atletico Madrid: Preview
Girona form analysis
The side has enjoyed a superb run of form recently, going undefeated over their last five La Liga matches with three wins and two draws. Their most recent result was an impressive 1-1 away draw at Real Betis, taking a first half lead through an Artem Dovbyk penalty before conceding late. This follows a dominant 3-0 home win over Alavés on December 19th powered by two goals from the red-hot Dovbyk. Prior to that, Girona pulled off a shocking 4-2 away victory over Barcelona on December 11th, with goals from Dovbyk, Miguel Gutiérrez, Valery, and the ageless Cristhian Stuani handing Barcelona just their second league loss this season.
Girona’s form run began with an excellent come-from-behind 2-1 home win over Valencia on December 2nd courtesy of two late Stuani goals. Bolstered by Stuani’s veteran presence and Dovbyk’s lethal finishing, Girona are exceeding all expectations by contending forthe title even this deep into the season.
Atletico Madrid form analysis
Atlético Madrid has endured inconsistent league form recently, with two wins, two draws, and a defeat across their last five La Liga matches. Their most recent result was a tightly contested 1-0 home win over Sevilla courtesy of a second half Marcos Llorente strike. That follows a dramatic six-goal thriller at home against Getafe on December 20th that finished 3-3, despite Atlético twice going ahead through Antoine Griezmann goals. Prior to that was a disappointing 2-0 loss away at Athletic Bilbao on December 16th where Atlético failed to find their clinical edge.
Sandwiched between those performances was a routine 2-1 home win over Almería powered by strikes from Álvaro Morata and Ángel Correa. Atlético’s up and down spell began with a tight 1-0 loss away to rivals Barcelona on December 4th. While there have been bright spots courtesy of the Griezmann-Morata duo, Atléti has lacked their trademark defensive solidarity during this run. Addressing these uncharacteristic vulnerabilities at the back will be key moving forward.
