Genoa vs Udinese: Preview
Genoa form analysis
Grifone have shown some encouraging signs in their recent Serie A matches but overall results have remained disappointing. They kicked this five game run off with an away win at struggling Salernitana as Andri Guðmundsson’s penalty sealed a comeback 2-1 win after Maximiliano Retegui had equalized. Genoa then beat fellow relegation candidates Lecce 2-1 courtesy of Retegui’s leveler and Caleb Ekuban’s winner. However, back-to-back goalless draws followed against Empoli and Atalanta before a heavy 4-1 home loss to Atalanta brought Genoa back down to earth.
Despite Retegui equalizing early in the second half, three late Atalanta goals sealed a comprehensive defeat. Most recently at mid table Napoli, Genoa conceded late on to a Marcus Frendrup goal before Cyril Ngonge equalized with the last kick of the game to rescue an unlikely point. So while Genoa have shown spirit, their defensive issues and lack of attacking quality remain worrying with relegation still a slightly concerning threat.
Udinese form analysis
Udinese’s recent Serie A form has been underwhelming, enduring three defeats and two draws from their last five league matches. Despite twice leading at home against AC Milan, Udinese succumbed to a 2-3 loss after late goals from Luka Jović and Noah Okafor. A 2-0 defeat away at Atalanta followed as goals from Aleksei Miranchuk and Gianluca Scamacca wrapped up a comfortable win.
Back-to-back goalless home draws with struggling Monza and mid-table Juventus showcased Udinese’s issues in attack. However, a smash and grab 1-0 win away to Juventus courtesy of Leonhard Gianetti’s goal lifted spirits. Most recently though, Udinese conceded a late equalizer at home to Cagliari as Gianluca Gaetano canceled out Jordan Zemura’s opener to force a 1-1 draw. So while defensively relatively solid, Udinese have badly lacked attacking spark and composure during this poor run. Finding more offensive threat will be key for them to get their season back on track.
