Former Indian opener, Gautam Gambhir has decided to quit politics and focus on his upcoming cricket commitments. In a big development, Gautam Gambhir has informed his fans that he has urged the Party Minster to relieve him of his political duties in a bid to focus on his cricket-related commitments.
In a post shared on X, Gambhir has informed about the development to his fans while also thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for giving him the BJP seat.
“I have requested Hon’ble Party President@JPNadda ji to relieve me of my political duties so that I can focus on my upcoming cricket commitments. I sincerely thank Hon’ble PM@narendramodiji and Hon’ble HM@AmitShahji for giving me the opportunity to serve the people. Jai Hind!”
Notably, Gambhir defeated Congress party’s Arvind Singh Lovely and AAP’s Atishi in 2019 to become BJP MP from East Delhi in 2019. He served the people for four years before taking the decision to call it quits.
The news has surprised a lot of people as his decision to quit comes right before the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. As per reports, Delhi BJP president Virender Sachdeva or party general secretary Harsh Malhotra are the candidates who are likely to replace Gambhir.
Gambhir to Mentor Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024
Gautam Gambhir is set to join Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League. Ahead of the new season, Gambhir was roped in by the franchise as a mentor in November 2023.
Gambhir’s rich history with the franchise isn’t unknown to the world. KKR have won two titles in IPL history and both the titles came under Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy. Under his leadership, Kolkata Knight Riders won the title in 2011 and 2013.
The southpaw played for Kolkata Knight Riders from 2011 to 2017. After rejoining the KKR as a mentor for the upcoming season, Gambhir expressed his emotions while stating that he is ‘hungry’ to help his team win the title.
“I am not an emotional person and not many things move me. But this is different. This is back to where it all started. Today, there is a lump in my throat and fire in my heart as I think about slipping into that purple and gold jersey once again. I am not only coming back to KKR but I am coming back to the city of joy. I am back. I am hungry. I am number 23. Ami KKR.”
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the IPL 2024 schedule for the first 21 matches. KKR are slated to play three matches in the first instalment of the tournament.
They will be kick-starting their campaign against SRH on 23rd March, followed by clashes against RCB on 29th March and Delhi Capitals on 3rd April 2024.
