Fulham form analysis
Fulham’s recent form has been inconsistent despite a clear capacity for offensive production. On December 16th, they fell 3-0 away to high-flying Newcastle United in a match that exposed some defensive issues. Those problems surfaced again a week later in a disappointing 2-0 home loss to bottom-side Burnley. However, Fulham’s attack showed its quality on December 26th away to Bournemouth despite the 3-0 scoreline. Mexican striker Raul Jimenez was bright with multiple chances as Fulham dominated large stretches before defensive mistakes proved costly.
Jimenez was at it again on New Year’s Eve, netting the equalizer in an impressive come-from-behind 2-1 home win over league leaders Arsenal. But defensive issues resurfaced on January 13th away to London rivals Chelsea, conceding early in a 1-0 defeat. Overall, Fulham have proven dangerous in attack. But an inability to sustain concentration and cut out errors defensively has led to disappointing losses. With too much attacking talent to be languishing 13th in the table, improving defensively could spark a surge up the standings for Fulham.
Newcastle United form analysis
Newcastle United’s recent form has shown the capacity for strong wins but defensive vulnerabilities against top sides. On December 16th, Newcastle earned an emphatic 3-0 home win over Fulham led by young starlet Lucas Miley’s first Premier League goal alongside Miguel Almirón and Dan Burn strikes. However, defensive issues surfaced a week later in a disappointing 1-0 home loss to strugglers Luton Town.
Problems at the back emerged again on Boxing Day despite Allan Saint-Maximin’s return, as Newcastle conceded three times in a 3-1 home loss to Nottingham Forest and striker Chris Wood. But Newcastle showed impressive resilience on January 2nd away to Liverpool, overcoming 1-0 and 3-1 deficits for a thrilling 4-2 loss thanks to Alexander Isak and Sven Botman goals. Most recently on January 13th it was another narrow home loss to title challengers Manchester City, as despite Isak and Anthony Gordon strikes Newcastle fell 3-2. Cutting out individual errors could help Newcastle find greater consistency in their push for European qualification.
