Frosinone vs Genoa: Preview
Frosinone form analysis
I Canarini entered Serie A facing a tough examination of their top flight credentials. They got off to a dream start with a 2-1 home win over Verona, displaying defensive organisation and clinical finishing from loanees Reinier and Soulé. A narrow 2-1 loss away at Bologna showed development was still required competing against quality opposition. But Frosinone continued to impress in a thrilling 4-3 loss away at Cagliari, as the exciting Soulé bagged a brace in an end-to-end encounter.
This proved no flash in the pan as Frosinone then claimed a statement 2-1 home win over Empoli, with new signings Çuni and Ibrahimović securing the points. However, the gulf in class facing elite clubs was highlighted as Inter comfortably beat Frosinone 0-2. Overall, Frosinone have emerged as dangerous opponents, built on defensive discipline and counter attacking threat from young, pacey forwards. Clever management in the transfer market has added quality to supplement emerging talents like Soulé. However, maintaining intensity and handling adversity will be key tests if Frosinone’s early promise is to grow.
Genoa form analysis
Genoa entered the new Serie A season with renewed optimism under coach Josep Martínez after gaining promotion as Serie B champions. They made an encouraging if losing start at home to AC Milan, going close to snatching a point late on. However, Genoa struggled to build on this as they were comfortably beaten 0-2 away at Atalanta, lacking offensive threat. Improvement followed though with two 1-0 victories over strugglers Salernitana and Verona built on organised defending and clinical finishing from new signing Guðmundsson.
This defensive steel briefly disappeared in an entertaining 2-1 loss at Cagliari, before Guðmundsson netted again to beat Verona 1-0. Overall, early signs suggest Genoa have developed the defensive stability and game management required to stay in Serie A under the pragmatic Martínez. Guðmundsson has added productivity going forward which must now be shared across the team. Maintaining concentration and recovering quickly from inevitable heavy defeats will be vital. But in tight games, their organisation and moments of quality could prove the difference.
