Freiburg vs Werder Bremen: Preview
Freiburg form analysis
In this season’s opener, Freiburg took the lead against the run of play through an Hoffenheim own goal before the break. Sallai added a superb second on the stroke of halftime after a VAR review. Freiburg were dangerous on the counter with Grifo and Höler combining well. Gregoritsch and Sallai both went close to extending the advantage after the break. Defensively Freiburg were organized and limited Hoffenheim’s chances overall. A big win for Freiburg who capitalized on their opportunities.
Previous season, Freiburg narrowly lost 0-1 away to RB Leipzig. However, they responded well by beating Union Berlin 4-2 after falling behind early. They then secured another good win, 2-0 over Wolfsburg with two late goals. This showed their ability to score late.
Their next match was a tough 2-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt where they led until late on. This highlighted some defensive issues in closing out tight games.
Werder Bremen form analysis
In the 1st gameweek, Werder Bremen struggled to get a foothold in the game especially in the first half. They conceded early to a clinical Bayern counterattack finished by Sane. In attack, Füllkrug had little impact as Bayern controlled possession. Ducksch and Bittencourt missed some half chances before the break. After halftime, Werder were more adventurous and had opportunities through Ducksch and Bittencourt but failed to capitalize. Overall they were outplayed by Bayern’s quality and will be disappointed to lose at home.
Last season, Werder Bremen suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich, keeping it respectable against the champions. However, they then lost late on against RB Leipzig 2-1 after initially taking the lead.
They bounced back from that with a good 1-1 draw on the road against Cologne, fighting from behind. But their next match was a disappointing 1-0 home loss to Union Berlin where they failed to score.
Overall, they have struggled for consistency, unable to follow wins or draws with further positive results.
