Former South African cricketer, Herschelle Gibbs has criticized the South African team coach for allowing Temba Bavuma to play in the South African team despite being unfit.
The South African Cricket Team captain hurt his left hamstring during the first day of the ongoing Test match between India and South Africa. The incident happened during the 20th over of the innings when Virat Kohli played a shot and Bavuma ran to stop it.

In the process, he injured his left hamstring and immediately walked off the field. Bavuma did not come on the field, thereafter, and Dean Elgar led the team in his absence. In light of that incident, Gibbs took a dig at Temba Bavuma as he called him ‘unfit’ and ‘overweight’.
“Ironic that the coach allows some players who are unfit and overweight to play when he started off as proteas trainer in 2009,” Gibbs quoted on X replying to a fan update on Temba’s injury.
It is to be noted that when Bavuma played his last game in the 2023 World Cup semi-final in India. On Tuesday, he injured his left hamstring as well. Bavuma’s injury has become a concern for the team, especially when he is the skipper and not in the best of forms with the bat.

Talking about the game, South Africa started well with the ball on Day 1 as they had reduced India to 24 for 3. But Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer then struck a half-century partnership to bring India back into the game.
Post Lunch, Rabada removed both the Indian batter and stole the momentum, once again. However, KL Rahul stood firm and singlehandedly took India to a competitive score. He arguably played the best Test knock of his career and also registered his second Test century in South Africa.

His outstanding ton helped the team reach a good-looking score of 245 runs on the board at the end of the first innings. M Siraj got the wicket of Aiden Markram (5) early on, however, Dean Elgar, once again, stood out with the bat.
He is still unbeaten at the crease with a score of 107 off 154 balls. He built a 100-run partnership with Tony de Zorzi and at one stage, it looked like South Africa was taking the game away from South Africa.
However, Bumrah came back with two quick strikes. However, post that, Elgar and Begingham have handled things well and are taking South Africa closer to India’s total. At the time of writing, South Africa has lost three wickets for 236 runs on the board, trailing by 9 runs.
