A ball boy who looked drowsy and yawning on Day 1 of the ongoing Test match between India and England in Ranchi was made fun of by former coach Ravi Shastri. The fourth Test began on Friday at the JSCA International Stadium, with England winning the toss and choosing to bat first. Ben Stokes, the captain, called the pitch “interesting” because of its peculiar appearance, which included noticeable cracks and a dark colour.
India took five wickets in a spirited first session. Nevertheless, the next two sessions were dull, the pitch appearing slow and with little movement. With the help of Ben Foakes and Ollie Robinson, Joe Root was able to demonstrate his best performance of the season in this way. After coming under fire for his unconventional dismissal, Root made amends by making a magnificent century using traditional cricket strokes.
Former coach Ravi Shastri takes a dig:
Even the spectators appeared disinterested during the dull second and third sessions when few people were present in the stadium. A small ball boy was positioned close to the line; he seemed sleepy and yawned. The man did not know that the camera was recording the event, which made pundit Ravi Shastri laugh.
He was heard saying, “Wake up, old boy… Have a glass of water, the cricket is getting interesting,” which left his co-commentators in splits.
Despite losing five wickets in the morning session, England demonstrated perseverance by reaching 302/7 at stumps on that particular day. Their comeback was greatly aided by Joe Root’s century, which was his 10th against India and first of the series. Root amassed 113 runs off 261 deliveries and remained unbeaten at 106 off 226 balls thanks to a vital partnership with Ben Foakes.
Mohammed Siraj dismissed Foakes and Tom Hartley quickly in the last session, but an innings-plus partnership between Ollie Robinson and Root steadied England. With three wickets in his debut, Akash Deep looked impressive, and Siraj chipped in with two. Each of the spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin claimed a wicket. Despite his bright start to the format, Yashasvi Jaiswal was unable to add to his Test wicket total during a short spell, as Kuldeep Yadav bowled ten overs without conceding a wicket.
