Although it has lasted more than ten years, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s rivalry is coming to an end as their respective careers come to an end. When footballer Ronaldo Al-Nassr’s team played Al-Ettifaq in the King’s Cup on Tuesday, October 31, Saudi Arabian fans brought up the rivalry.
On Monday, the Inter Miami and Argentina mainstay cemented his status as the greatest football player of all time by winning his eighth Ballon d’Or. With his most recent victory, he climbed three places above his most formidable opponent, securing his dominance.
Ronaldo, as expected, expressed his displeasure with his rival’s success in a contentious Instagram post. He responded to a post in which he claimed Lionel Messi did not deserve three Ballons d’Or in his lifetime.

The 38-year-old was the target of taunts from visiting fans during the Kings Cup match between Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq and Al-Nassr. They kept chanting Messi’s name throughout the game. Prompting Ronaldo to respond by telling them to stop yelling and to calm down. However, after his team won 1-0 in extra time to advance to the quarterfinals, Cristiano Ronaldo had the last laugh on behalf of the Al-Ettifaq fans.
As their careers intersected and they shared the spotlight, the two celebrities constantly encouraged one another. Cristiano Ronaldo won the Ballon d’Or for the first time in 2008. Messi followed suit in 2009, and the pair continued to win until Luka Modric won the trophy in 2018. Ronaldo and Messi now share 15 Ballon d’Or awards.
Before the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the Portuguese player stated that he wanted to win the competition in order to surpass his opponent on that score. But it was not to be, as Argentina defeated Portugal in the quarterfinals. These two legendary players had a rivalry that extended beyond the game, with their fans frequently competing for supremacy online.
