Fiorentina vs Atalanta: Preview
Fiorentina form analysis
Viola began this period strongly by coming from behind to draw 2-2 at home with Lecce on the opening weekend thanks to goals from Nico Gonzalez and Duncan.
They built on that result with an accomplished 2-0 home win over Rapid Vienna in the Europa League playoffs as Gonzalez grabbed another brace. It maintained their perfect start under Vincenzo Italiano.
However, Fiorentina’s limitations were then exposed as they were thrashed 0-4 away at defending champions Inter Milan in Serie A. Lautaro Martinez scored twice in another Gonzalez masterclass as Fiorentina had no answers.
Overall, it’s been a mixed start to the season for Fiorentina as they balance Serie A and European commitments. At their best, they have showcased their attacking threats led by Nico Gonzalez. But establishing more consistency and steel will be crucial if they are to push for a Champions League spot this campaign.
Atalanta form analysis
Atalanta began this period by grinding out a 0-2 away win at Sassuolo thanks to late goals from new signings De Ketelaere and Zortea. It maintained their strong end to last season.
However, Atalanta then suffered a surprise 1-2 defeat away at Serie B side Frosinone in the Coppa Italia. Despite Zapata pulling a goal back, first half strikes from Harroui and Monterisi won it for the minnows.
Atalanta did bounce back in their last match, comfortably dispatching newly-promoted Monza 3-0 at home. Goals from Ederson, Scamacca and another Scamacca strike made it a dominant victory.
Overall, it’s been an inconsistent start to the season for Atalanta as they adapt to roster changes. Their best displays have shown they still possess an impressive attacking threat. But maintaining intensity and resilience for full matches is crucial for Atalanta to sustain another top four push this campaign.
