Vietnam will be making its FIFA Women’s World Cup debut. In 1997 they competed in their first recognized international game. Many of the present side’s pillars had just been born at this point. However, the squad has improved significantly over the previous 26 years, moving up lately from 42nd to 32nd in the Fifa global rankings (and from 8th to 5th in Asia). The past ten years have seen a meteoric rise in Vietnamese women’s football, with the squad winning the South East Asian Games four times in a row. Vietnam may impose itself on a larger international scale thanks to its successes in south-east Asia.
Despite the fact that there is still much to be done to promote women’s football, Vietnam manages to keep a national tournament going with seven teams. The first players to be sent worldwide were Huynh Nhu and Tran Thi Hong Nhung, who went to Portugal and Thailand, respectively. Vietnam will engage in a counterattack strategy. Tuyet Dung and Thanh Nha, two quick wingers, and Huynh Nhu, an athletic striker who is also an excellent finisher, are this team’s strengths. They scored against Germany in a friendly in Frankfurt in June thanks to this style of play.
The Manager
The World Cup will be Mai Duc Chung’s final competition in charge of the women’s and men’s national teams, bringing a successful career to a close. Until Chung, no one had been able to bring Vietnam’s World Cup goal to fruition. He has, far too often, been given temporary control of Vietnam’s men’s and under-23 teams in times of crisis until a new coach could be found, earning him the nickname “stuntman” (or emergency caretaker).
Star player
The squad’s sole exporting Vietnamese player, Huynh Nhu, serves as the group’s captain, primary striker, and source of motivation. In her debut season with Länk in Portugal, she scored seven goals. The five-time winner of the Vietnam Golden Ball has demonstrated excellent adaption to the European setting. She is in talks with Länk about extending his contract. Portugal happens to be Vietnam’s second group-stage opponent. Huynh Nhu is a complete striker who can dribble, shoot well with either foot and provide a threat in the air. She has demonstrated throughout her tenure at Länk that she poses a danger from free kicks as well.
Rising star
Nguyen Thi Thanh Nha, who is only 21, has already made 27 appearances for Vietnam and scored seven goals. She has competed in the quarterfinals of the Asian Cup. Nha has won two gold medals at the SEA Games and will be important in this World Cup. Thanh Nha is a cunning and adaptable attacker who is already well-known on Vietnamese social media. She is not a skilled finisher, but her quickness is excellent.
Fun Fact
This squad distinguishes remarkable since there are no naturalized or foreign players on it at a period when naturalization has become widespread around the globe. The group as a whole has received domestic training, and the majority of the players represent Vietnamese clubs. Only Huynh Nhu is currently touring internationally.
State of Football
The most popular sport in Vietnam is football, although women’s football is not treated equally to men’s football. With the exception of the national team, which draws a sizable audience. A few hundred to a thousand spectators often attend club-level matches.
Our Prediction
Vietnam is in Group E in the FIFA Women’s World Cup alongside the USA, the current global champions, and the Netherlands, the 2019 runners-up. Vietnam is not a likely prospect for any of the top two spots. Their main focus will probably be on limiting the number of goals they let in. They will be attempting to win the other game against fellow first-time World Cup participants in Portugal.
