The ongoing 2023 FIBA World Cup has ended for half of the teams in the tournament following the end of the classification round on Saturday. In addition to determining the final positions of the teams in the tournament, these games offered tickets to the 2024 Olympic Games and the associated qualifying tournaments, which will be held the following summer.
Standings for teams from 17-32
17. South Sudan
South Sudan made history by reaching the FIBA World Cup for the first time. Their record was 3-2, and they clinched their spot at the next summer’s Olympic Games as Africa’s best team.
18. France
France, one of the favorites for a podium finish, was a major disappointment in the tournament. The team failed to reach the second round and finished in 18th place. Now they are turning their attention to the 2024 Olympics, where they have already qualified and will be the hosts.
19. Japan
It was an uphill task for Japan to knock out two of Australia, Germany, and Finland in the opening round. Despite fighting, they failed to do so. However, their mission has been successful, as they qualified for the Olympics as the top team in Asia.
20. Egypt
Egypt had a disappointing run in the FIBA World Cup, as they were knocked out in the opening round and failed to advance to the Olympics as Africa’s best team after losing to New Zealand. However, they will play in the qualifying tournament, which is their minimum target.
21. Finland
Finland also turned out to be one of the disappointments in the FIBA World Cup. The team had Lauri Markkanen with them, so it was expected of them to at least make it to the second round, but they didn’t win a single game in the opening round. However, they ended their campaign with two consecutive wins.
22. New Zealand
New Zealand lost a must-win game against Greece, and the classification games did not matter much to them. Ultimately, they secured their spot in the qualifying tournament and left the FIBA World Cup on a good note.
23. Lebanon
Lebanon was the weakest team in Group H and lost three matches, but ended the classification game with two consecutive wins.
24. Philippines
The hosts disappointed their fans with their performance. The tone set by Utah Jazz guard Jordan Clarkson was expected to propel them further in the tournament. The team ended their campaign with a record of 1-4.
25. Mexico
They struggled throughout the tournaments and lost three matches, but ended the campaign after winning both classification games.
26. Angola
Angola won only one of the five matches and also missed the chance to qualify for the Olympics as the top African team.
27. Cote d’Ivoire
After losing to Brazil, their hopes to enter the second round were shattered, and now the team is out of the tournament after just winning and losing both classification games.
28. Cape Verde
Verde’s first appearance at the FIBA World Cup was not successful, but the team did enjoy the moment and finished their campaign with a 1-4 record.
29. China
China won one and lost four matches. Their head coach, Sasha Djordjevic, failed in his first major FIBA tournament as the coach of the team.
30. Venezuela
The team lost all five games and showed a poor display of basketball on both ends. They wanted to challenge for a spot in the second round but failed miserably.
31. Jordan
Although Jordan lost all five games, they were a fun team to watch, with Rondae Hollis-Jefferson turning heads.
32. Iran
Another weak link in the FIBA World Cup, Iran joined Venezuela and Jordan as the only winless teams in the tournament.
