The Sydney Sixers bowler Tom Curran received a four-game suspension for allegedly intimidating a referee. The group has already announced that it will be submitting an appeal. Now, the internet has gone gaga with cricketer Tom Curran hefty ban.
Due to an incident that happened during the Hobart Hurricanes game on December 11, the England pacer was charged with a Level 3 infraction under the Cricket Australia Code of Conduct. The pacer is accused of “intimidation or attempted intimidation of an Umpire, Match Referee, or Medical Personnel whether by language or conduct (including gestures),” according to the BBL’s statement.
Cricketer Tom Curran ban:
Curran disagreed with a statement issued by Cricket Australia summarizing the findings of Code of Conduct Commissioner Adrian Anderson. “The Commissioner found: Curran completed a practice run up prior to the start of the match in which he ran onto part of the pitch; Curran was verbally instructed by the Umpire not to run onto the pitch,” the statement said.
Curran then made his way to the other end of the field to finish off another practice run-up. Curran was prevented from entering the field by the umpire, who stood near the stumps and motioned for him to leave the field.
The statement continued, “Curran was seen in the footage gesturing to the Umpire to move away from the pitch. Curran then tried to run up and down the bowling crease at full speed in a practice run-up to the umpire, who was facing him. In order to reduce the chance of a collision, the umpire moved to his right.”
In response to the suspension, Tom Curran’s BBL team provided the player with assistance during this period. They allegedly offer the bowler’s perspective on the current Big Bash League controversy.
Fan’s reaction:
Sydney Sixers head coach Rachael Haynes stated, “Tom and the club maintain that Tom did not knowingly or intentionally intimidate a match official, and on legal advice, we will exercise our right to appeal the decision. We’ll be there for Tom during this time, and we’re excited to see him back on the field.” Check out the epic fan’s reaction below.
Match referee Bob Parru charged Curran under article 2.17 of the Code of Conduct for attempting or actually inciting intimidation of medical personnel, umpires, or match referees through words or gestures during a match. Tom Curran contested the accusation, but he was ultimately found guilty of the crime and given four suspension points, which means he will miss four BBL games.
The Sixers went on to state that they would challenge the ruling. Rachael, the head of the Sydney Sixers, stated that Tom and the Club will use their right to appeal the ruling and have maintained their position that they have not purposefully or knowingly intimidated a match official. He went on to say that the team will help Tom Curran and will see to it that he gets back on the field as soon as possible.
