India’s star batter Shreyas Iyer’s back injury trouble with his back continues to haunt his career. He underwent back surgery last year and missed the entire IPL 2023 season because of the same.
During the recently concluded Ranji Trophy final, Iyer’s back injury flared up again and what followed was an outrage from fans directed at BCCI. The fans think that BCCI forced Iyer to participate in the Ranji trophy despite him not being fit to play.
Earlier, the governing body of cricket in India had omitted Iyer from the central contract for not participating in the Ranji Trophy. Shreyas Iyer complained of issues in his back at the time but the NCA’s medical team headed by Nitin Patel declared him fit.
Despite enduring pain in his back, Iyer went to participate in the domestic tournament. He played a crucial 95-run knock against Vidarbha in the final but had to seek treatment from the physio twice.
His injury worsened as Iyer didn’t take the field on the 4th and 5th day of the Test match. According to a report by TOI, Iyer also went to the hospital for a scan of his back.
“It’s not looking good. It’s the same back injury which has been aggravated. It’s unlikely that he will take the field on Day 5 of the Ranji Trophy final. He is in danger of missing the initial matches of the IPL,” a source told.
Shreyas Iyer’s Back Injury Forces Him Out of Initial Stage of IPL 2024
As per a recent report, Shreyas Iyer is likely to miss the upcoming few matches for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2024. The fans aren’t too happy with BCCI indirectly pressuring the Mumbai batter to play despite him not fully fit.
After undergoing surgery last year, Iyer made a phenomenal comeback with a fruitful campaign in the 2023 World Cup. He scored 530 runs in 11 matches at an average of 66.25 and a strike rate of 113.25.
He was also part of India’s recent Test series against England. However, the 29-year-old couldn’t make a significant impact with the bat in the first two Tests. His scores in the four innings read: 35, 13, 27, and 29, respectively. He was dropped from the third Test and later, was ruled out of the remaining two Tests due to back issues.
Here’s a look at some of the reactions from the fans with regards to Iyer’s current scenario:
