Glenn Maxwell was one man whose show made him stand out. Glenn Maxwell hit 201* to lead Australia past Afghanistan in a 292-run chase in an incredible effort that will go down in cricket history as one of the greatest knocks ever. Australia was 91/7 at one point, and Afghanistan was bowling with all of its might. Initially, it appeared as though Afghanistan would easily win the match, but Glenn Maxwell had other plans.
Afghanistan pacers Azmatullah Omarzai and Naveen-ul-Haq ran wild at the start of the Australian innings, taking off the Australian top order. As Australia defeated Afghanistan in their ICC Cricket World Cup match today, all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was praised by captain Pat Cummins for hitting an explosive century, referring to it as the “greatest thing that has ever happened”.
At the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday, Maxwell’s one-man army saved Australia from a disastrous scoreline of 91/7 while chasing 292, leading them to an incredible victory over Afghanistan by three wickets.
Preposterous. I’m not sure how to put that into words. Fantastic victory! It must be the most amazing thing to happen in history. People will occasionally remark, “Yeah, I was at the stadium for this game.” Maxwell was excellent and composed. He was always planning. It was truly amazing to be able to win the game in that manner, even after falling 200 yards behind,” Cummins remarked following the game.
“About whether Maxwell wanted to go, Zampa was in and out three times, but Maxi wanted to stay in the game. We had two NSW (New South Wales) players lined up. It’s critical to keep in mind that you can succeed from any place. I have true faith in the group, and it’s fantastic that we’ve advanced to the semifinals. (Regarding what they could have done better, I’m going to halt that.) I don’t think it’s the time or place. The first 20 overs are crucial, in my opinion; therefore, the toss is a little hard here. We could have done a better job, of course,” he continued.
Afghanistan chose to bat first as they entered the match. While Rahmat Shah (30), Afghanistan’s captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (26), and Azmatullah Omarzai (22) made significant contributions to bring the team close to the 230-run mark, Zadran kept one end solid. Then, in the last few overs, Rashid Khan (35* in 18 balls, two fours, three sixes) made a cameo, helping Afghanistan to 291/5 in 50 overs as Zadran quickened his pace.
For Australia, Josh Hazlewood (2/39) was the best bowler. Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, and Adam Zampa all claimed wickets.
Australia was briefly in serious trouble at 91/7 in the pursuit of 292, but skipper Pat Cummins and Glenn Maxwell combined for a record double-century stand. Despite experiencing cramps and extreme heat, Maxwell managed to achieve Australia’s first-ever ODI double century, finishing at 201* in just 128 balls with 10 sixes and 21 fours. At 12*, Pat Cummins concluded.
