The finale of NXT Heatwave’s main event saw a surprising turn of events and the false finish led to a shocking title change. Ethan Page became the new NXT Champion on Sunday night following his win.
Page shared his joy on social media, stating, “Told you.” An hour later, he posted a photo of himself celebrating his win, and in the caption, he wrote, “Top of the world, where I belong.” Meanwhile, former champion Trick Williams was definitely not happy with how he lost his title.
The event took a surprising turn
Williams had been on a great roll since winning the NXT championship. Many fans believed that he would leave the show as champion, but on Sunday, all odds were against him. Williams and J’Von Evans were originally scheduled to have a singles clash, but the matchup turned into a Fatal Four-Way after Ethan Page and Shawn Spears got involved.
As the match came to a close, Williams landed his signature move on Evans, followed by another on Page. However, Page fell on top of Evans just as Shawn Spears was pulling Williams out of the ring, preventing him from breaking the pinfall. Evans was unable to kick out the unexpected series of events that gave Page his first championship in NXT. What’s next for Williams after this is still unclear. He will either be first in line to get another shot at the title or he might be called up to the main roster.
Ethan Page has made a rapid rise in WWE
Page’s rise to the top of NXT has been rapid, as in just a few weeks, he went from being an AEW-contracted superstar to making the jump in WWE and becoming the NXT Champion. This meteoric rise through the ranks was definitely unexpected, but we can say that it was the result of years of hard work for Page. Leaving AEW and joining WWE was clearly the right decision for his wrestling career.
Ethan Page recently stated that he came from a place where it was very chaotic and disorganized. He is still learning because he is new here, but he finds everything incredible. “It feels good to not feel like I have to do everything myself. Having people who want to see me succeed is mind-blowing,” said Page. The landscape of NXT has changed now that Ethan Page has captured the NXT title.
