Erik ten Hag has brushed off recent comments made by Cristiano Ronaldo, stating that the Portuguese forward is “far away from Manchester” and distancing himself from Ronaldo’s remarks about Manchester United’s ability to challenge for top honors.
Ronaldo, who had a turbulent end to his second stint at Old Trafford, had previously criticized the club’s direction, questioning whether United had the capability to compete for Premier League or Champions League titles.
In an interview earlier this week, Ronaldo was quoted as saying that Manchester United needed a complete rebuild and suggested that they werenât in a position to seriously contend for major trophies.
“The coach, they say they have no chance to win the league and Champions League,” he said.
“You cannot say that you’re not going to fight to win.”
When asked about Ronaldoâs comments, Ten Hag responded coolly, emphasizing that Ronaldo is now distant from the club both geographically and contextually.
âHeâs far away in Saudi, far from Manchester,â Ten Hag said.
âEveryone is entitled to their opinion. Itâs OK.â
His brief response seemed to downplay the significance of Ronaldoâs statements, keeping the focus on the teamâs ongoing journey rather than dwelling on past disputes.
Ronaldo’s departure from Manchester United last season came after a public fallout with Ten Hag, with the forward accusing the Dutch manager of betrayal. The breakdown in their relationship led to the termination of Ronaldoâs contract by mutual consent, and the forward subsequently moved to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
Ten Hag, meanwhile, is facing pressure as Manchester Unitedâs early-season form has been shaky. Having lost two of their first three matches, United have now won just five of their last 16 Premier League fixtures, stretching back to last season.
Despite the rocky start, Ten Hag remains calm and confident in his approach, calling for patience as the team navigates a transitional period. âWe are still in a transition period,â he acknowledged, noting the need to integrate younger players while dealing with key injuries.
Looking ahead to Saturdayâs game against Southampton, Ten Hag insisted that the focus remains on winning, regardless of external noise.
“Itâs very early in the season. Itâs about winning trophies and being as high as possible,” he said.
“Do everything to win every game.”
While Ronaldoâs criticisms may stir discussion, Ten Hag appears to have his mind set on the bigger picture: improving Manchester Unitedâs performance on the pitch and leading the club forward during this challenging period.
