England Paceman Carse Banned for Betting on Cricket Matches
Brydon Carse, a rising star in English fast bowling, has been handed a 16-month suspension by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for placing bets on cricket matches. However, with 13 months suspended, Carse will be eligible to return after August 28th, 2024.
This suspension comes at a crucial time for Carse, who was considered a potential candidate to fill the void left by the retirements of veterans Stuart Broad and James Anderson, along with injuries to Jofra Archer.
The newly formed Cricket Regulator discovered that Carse placed 303 bets on various matches between 2017 and 2019. While he did not wager on games he participated in, he did bet on matches involving his county team, Durham.
The ECB, in a statement, emphasized their strict stance against such breaches: “We take these matters extremely seriously and do not condone any form of anti-corruption breach in cricket.”
However, they acknowledged Carse’s cooperation and remorse: “We support the Cricket Regulator’s decision and their consideration of the mitigating factors in Brydon’s case. He has co-operated and shown remorse for his actions.”
The ECB also expressed hope that Carse’s case serves as a lesson for other players, stating, “We are satisfied that Brydon has shown growth in the five years since this breach and has demonstrated a greater understanding of his responsibilities. We are hopeful that his case can serve as an educational example for other cricketers.”
Despite the suspension, Carse’s two-year ECB contract will remain in place. The 28-year-old has already represented England in 17 white-ball matches and was even included in the ODI World Cup squad last year.
While his absence will be felt during the upcoming West Indies tour, Carse has a chance to redeem himself upon his return in late August.
