UFC star Dustin Poirier has recently revealed the severity of the injuries he suffered during his bout against Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 302. “The Diamond” fought bravely but eventually lost via submission to Makhachev in the fifth round. He now explained the extent of his injuries after the bout.
Dustin revealed the details about his injuries
Poirier posted that his nose is badly broken, his ribs are fractured and ACL is partially torn. He explained that his nose was shattered, an injury he has suffered before in his career. In addition, Poirier mentioned a knee injury he suffered while defending a third-round takedown from Makhachev in front of the cage. His coach, Yves Edwards, also revealed that Dustin had been dealing with a rib injury before the bout, which significantly limited his wrestling training in the final weeks leading up to the clash.
Dustin is yet to decide on his future in the sport and is expected to take time off to recover regardless of any retirement plans. It is yet to be determined whether or not he will require surgery for his injuries, which may cause him to take longer to recover for the rest of the year. While a complete ACL tear often requires surgery, a partial tear may allow Poirier to take rest and physiotherapy.
Currently he is under indefinite suspension
“The Diamond” is placed under an indefinite suspension by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board due to the severity of his injuries. To have the suspension lifted, Poirier needs to receive clearance from both an ENT specialist and an orthopedist. Moving forward, he also acknowledged that his recent fight was probably his last, but he has not made a definitive decision.
