In a stunning upset, Ryan Garcia defeated Devin Haney by majority decision on Saturday night, but was ineligible to claim the WBC super lightweight title due to missing weight.
Garcia (26-1) scored three knockdowns throughout the fight, but came into the weigh-in over three pounds heavier than the contracted limit. Despite a valiant performance, the weight miss disqualified him from winning Haney’s (31-1) belt.
Judges awarded the fight 115-109, 114-110, and 112-112 on the scorecards.
Haney took to social media on Wednesday to acknowledge the defeat, his first professional loss. He pointed out the weight disparity and expressed interest in a rematch.
First off I wanna say.. Alhamdulillah Allah is the perfect planner and I trust his plan no matter what. I came up short but this boxing, and if anyone knows me they know that I am a true competitor, and always wanted to test my skills against the best fighters in the world.Ryan, despite the circumstances was victorious that night and that’s fine. I do feel like weight played a role in it but only Allah knows. I would love to run it back and give the fans a FAIR fight within an agreed weight. With that being said.. Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya, representing Garcia, rejected the idea of a rematch in a comment on Haney’s post. De La Hoya went on to express his support for Garcia’s move up in weight class and criticized Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn, who represents Haney.
Garcia himself has echoed De La Hoya’s sentiment, suggesting a shift to a higher weight division and potentially even a crossover fight with UFC champion Sean O’Malley.
The back-and-forth on social media suggests a rematch between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney is unlikely, leaving the future of the super lightweight division and each fighter’s next move uncertain.
