David Benavidez Blasts Canelo Alvarez, Frustrated by WBC After Alvarez Disrespect
David Benavidez, the “Mexican Monster,” is fuming after comments from Canelo Alvarez seemingly shut the door on a potential fight between the two.
This weekend, following the press conference promoting his upcoming bout with Oleksandr Gvozdyk, Benavidez addressed Canelo’s recent remarks. Canelo had suggested he could fight both Benavidez and Jaime Munguia on the same night, a comment Benavidez sees as disrespectful and dismissive.
“He’s running out of excuses,” Benavidez fired back to the media. “He says the only thing I bring is extra weight and that I’m not worth a fight, but then asks for $200 million for other fights? Now he wants to fight me on the same night? That’s ridiculous. Just be honest and say you don’t want to fight me. It looks like he’s scared.”
Despite the frustration, Benavidez maintains a grudging respect for Canelo’s accomplishments. “I’ve always credited Canelo, he’s a great fighter and a legend,” he acknowledged to journalist Andres Cantera. “But I’ve done my part. I’ve been the mandatory challenger for the WBC for three years and he won’t give me the fight.”
Benavidez went on to predict a knockout victory over Canelo, showcasing his confidence despite the lack of a confirmed matchup.

Adding to Benavidez’s frustrations is the WBC’s recent decision. The organization gave him a tight deadline to decide between remaining at light heavyweight (175 lbs) or returning to super middleweight (168 lbs). “I earned the right to fight for the title,” Benavidez told Fighthype. “The WBC giving me only ten days to decide my weight class is unfair.”
While offering a glimmer of hope for a Canelo fight in the future, Benavidez remains focused on his upcoming challenge. “We’ll make the weight decision after the Gvozdyk fight,” he concluded. “But definitely, if the Canelo fight can happen, it’s a fight everyone wants to see.”
