Dave Houghton Steps Down as Zimbabwe Cricket Coach Amid World Cup Setback
Zimbabwe’s cricket board was met with a surprise as coach Dave Houghton announced his immediate resignation following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2024 Twenty20 World Cup.
The news came after Zimbabwe suffered defeats to Namibia and Uganda in the crucial qualifiers, marking a disappointing chapter in Houghton’s 18-month tenure.
Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) conveyed the decision on Wednesday, emphasizing Houghton’s enduring contribution to the organization. Despite stepping down from the coaching role, Houghton is set to remain involved with ZC in a yet-to-be-disclosed capacity.
In his resignation letter to the ZC board, Houghton candidly admitted to “losing the changeroom” and expressed the belief that a “new voice” was necessary for the team’s progression.

The recent setbacks, including the failure to secure spots in both the 50-over World Cup and the T20 World Cup, evidently took a toll on the coach-player relationship.
Tavengwa Mukuhlani, ZC chairman, acknowledged Houghton’s dedicated efforts to rebuild the team’s foundations for long-term success. Mukuhlani conveyed the organization’s gratitude and expressed optimism about collaborating with Houghton in a different role.
As Zimbabwe prepares for a white-ball series in Sri Lanka in January, an interim technical team will be appointed to guide the team through this transitional phase.

Additionally, the ZC board established a three-member committee, led by Lloyd Mhishi, to investigate the World Cup qualification failures and assess the overall structure of ZC’s cricket affairs. The committee is expected to provide insights and recommendations within three weeks.
The departure of Dave Houghton marks a turning point for Zimbabwe Cricket, ushering in a period of introspection and strategic reevaluation as they seek to overcome recent challenges and redefine their on-field fortunes.
