UFC President Dana White has given an update on Conor McGregor’s return. The Irishman publicly claimed that he is eager to return to the UFC octagon and initially wanted to make his long-awaited return at UFC 300. He also turned his focus to fighting Michael Chandler at middleweight on June 29 at the annual International Fight Week card in Las Vegas. However, White didn’t acknowledge McGregor’s declarations and has provided his own update recently in an interview.
White on the highly anticipated matchup
Dana White revealed on The Pat McAfee Show that the highly anticipated matchup between McGregor and Chandler is still in the works, with the bout expected to take place this year, most probably in the autumn, although no specific date has been set yet.
When White was asked about “McGregor vs. Chandler,” he said, “Hopefully this year. There is no date. I’m expecting a fall. We finish it in the fall.”
It marks another delay to the fight, which was originally expected to take place last year in the summer of 2023 following McGregor’s coaching stint on a reality show. His absence from the UFC’s anti-doping program, following a foot injury suffered in his last fight of 2021 against Poirier, further postponed his return until October.
Chandler is steadfast for the match
Chandler has patiently awaited his matchup with McGregor, a commitment he’s made since they coached together on the reality show. Despite waiting more than 19 months, Chandler remains steadfast despite McGregor’s frustration and taunts. While Chandler’s long layoff raises questions about his readiness, he remains determined to fight.
McGregor expressed disappointment
In an interview last December, McGregor expressed his frustration at being sidelined and his eagerness to return to action, emphasizing his desire to fight against Manny Pacquiao. He lamented the lack of communication from the UFC regarding a potential fight. He expressed disappointment at the delay in his return, which was originally scheduled for December but will now potentially take place in April.
