It is now official that UFC fans will not get to see Conor McGregor’s highly anticipated return this year and this is confirmed by UFC President Dana White himself. This comes after the Irishman campaigned relentlessly to fight since 2023. However, he has suffered a number of setbacks that have delayed his UFC return. During an interview ahead of UFC 306, Dana White said that McGregor is now expected to return in early 2025, after speculation about a possible comeback this year was built.
Conor McGregor will not fight in 2024
White said, “Conor McGregor will fight next year, early 2025,” putting an end to rumors of a fight taking place in December. “The Notorious” last stepped inside the UFC octagon in July 2021 when he suffered a dominating TKO loss to Dustin Poirier. The fight ended via doctor’s stoppage after McGregor injured his foot. Since then, he has been recovering and was set to headline UFC 303 against Michael Chandler in June 2024. However, McGregor was forced to pull out due to a toe injury. Fans were hoping that the fight would take place later in the year, but White confirmed that McGregor will not fight this year.
UFC 310 in December was seen as a potential pay-per-view for McGregor’s return, but White’s latest announcement ruled that out. He stressed the logistical and personal challenges, saying, “Despite the fight preparations and press conferences, I was the one this year saying I don’t think he’s going to fight this year.” White also hinted at how McGregor’s immense wealth could affect his motivation to return. “He is a very wealthy guy, we’ll find out when he comes back,” said White.
The uncertainty behind McGregor’s return has led to many theories
McGregor’s delayed return has given rise to several theories, including one put forward by Youtuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, who questioned whether the “Mystic Mac” is truly focused on making a comeback. Furthermore, UFC veteran Chael Sonnen has hinted at knowing the specifics of McGregor’s return. Conor McGregor’s last win in the UFC octagon still remains to be the knockout of Donald Cerrone in 2020. After that, he suffered two consecutive losses to Poirier. Fans now await McGregor’s next move in 2025.
