Cyprus vs Spain: Preview
Cyprus form analysis
Cyprus’s recent string of Euro qualifying matches has made their obvious weaknesses against more formidable opponents plain. They began with an expected hard 1-3 home loss to Norway, and after falling down early on, they were punished with a double from Haaland. The following game, a 0–3 home loss to Scotland in which they were completely outmatched, made things worse. This continued in their next game against a rampaging Spain, which resulted in a sad 0–6 home loss.
In their most recent home game, they lost 0–4 to Norway and were unable to stop their deadly attack, which was spearheaded by a brace from Haaland. Not much had changed. They most recently ended this unfortunate streak with a bang, losing 0–4 away to Georgia in a sloppy effort that highlighted the class divide. All things considered, Cyprus has looked quite vulnerable on defense and offered little in the way of offensive threat save for the occasional half-chance. Having lost five games in a row and let up fourteen goals, it is hard to see any significant improvement occurring any time soon.
Spain form analysis
Spain’s recent matches has shown off their youthful, developing talent while also serving as a reminder of reality sometimes needed. They began with a depressing 0–2 loss to Scotland on the road, losing because they were unable to handle the ferocity and direct play of the hosts. But in their next game, their thrilling offense really came to life as they crushed Georgia 7-1. On the road behind goals from Olmo, Yamal, Williams, and an own goal by Morata.
Their next game saw them demolish Cyprus 6-0 at home. Thanks to goals from Gavi, Joselu, Merino, and two each from Torres and Baena. Regaining momentum from the defeat to Scotland, Spain easily defeated them 2-0 at home behind goals from Morata and Sancet. With Gavi leading from the start, they won 1-0 on the road against Norway to round off their run of form. Overall, against strong athletic teams like Scotland, Spain has demonstrated both their abundance of young talent. Such as Gavi, Pedri, and Williams, as well as their obvious shortcomings.
