Cricketer Mohammed Shami award nominations:
The Indian Cricket Board has written to the Indian Ministry of Sports requesting that Mohammed Shami be considered for the Arjuna Award. The special request was made in response to the Indian pacer’s exploits with the ball during the ODI World Cup in 2023.
Mohammed Shami was India’s standout bowler, taking 24 wickets in just seven games. His wicket haul included three fifers and a best of 7/57 against the Kiwis. This is India’s best bowling figures in ODI cricket.
The right-arm pacer also became India’s all-time leading wicket-taker in ODI World Cup history, surpassing 50 wickets. India went on to lose the final to Australia, and Shami gave India another fight chance in Ahmedabad.
Player history:
Shardul Thakur had played the first few games of the ODI World Cup tournament before being replaced by Shami for the game against New Zealand. The Indian quickly picked up a five-wicket haul in his first game. Mohammed Shami took four wickets in the following game against England. His match against Ben Stokes was one of the tournament’s highlights.
The 33-year-old picked his then-ODI best figures of 5/18 against Sri Lanka in Mumbai. Because of that effort, India was able to bowl out Sri Lanka for just 55 runs, allowing them to win the game by a massive 302 runs.
The pace bowler has been rested by the Indian team management for the white ball series against South Africa. According to reports, Mohammed Shami is suffering from ankle problems but is expected to be fit for the test series. Rahul Dravid and his team will also be hoping that Shami will be fully fit for the upcoming 5-match test series against England.
Mohammed Shami biography:
Mohammed Shami was born in a remote village in Uttar Pradesh to a fast-bowler-turned-farmer, and his father saw a spark in only one of his five children (all aspiring fast bowlers) and took him to a renowned coach in Moradabad, the closest city to their village. He was a bundle of energy, a hard worker with stamina, and he was trained like a workhorse under the watchful eye of Badruddin Siddique.
Shami was advised to move to Kolkata by his coach after being snubbed from the U-19 selections due to alleged politically corrupt selections. He was mentored by Debabrata Das to the point of living under his roof, and he just about made it to the Bengal U-22 team.
Mohammed Shami was identified as a special talent after a specially conducted net session supervised by Sourav Ganguly, and after a difficult climb through the ranks, he was given the opportunity to represent Bengal at the Ranji level.
