Cricket Australia (CA) unveiled a comprehensive 10-year plan, titled the Women and Girls Action Plan, designed to significantly elevate the profile and participation of women’s cricket in Australia. The plan outlines a multi-pronged approach encompassing a revamped domestic structure, increased investment, and a clear focus on achieving Olympic glory.
A Streamlined Domestic Schedule After WBBL
A key feature of the plan is the streamlining of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) season. The WBBL will be shortened to 40 games plus finals, aligning it with the Big Bash League (BBL) schedule. This change accommodates a burgeoning women’s cricket calendar, including the upcoming T20 World Cup and the India-Australia ODI series.
However, the reduction in WBBL matches is balanced by the creation of a new state-based T20 competition. This new tournament will run alongside the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) and provide additional playing opportunities for domestic players. The competition will also serve as a valuable lead-in to the WBBL season.
Cricket Australia Plans Financial Boost for Female Players
The plan addresses concerns about reduced playing opportunities with a significant financial boost for female domestic players. The average female player with a WBBL and state contract, along with full match payments, can expect to earn AU$163,322 next season, a substantial increase from the previous year.
Women’s Cricket in Australia will go Beyond the Domestic Arena
CA’s vision extends beyond the domestic circuit. The plan sets ambitious goals for the next decade, including a AU$100 million increase in revenue from women’s cricket, a quadrupling of participation rates among girls aged 5-12, and a AU$500 million investment in women’s cricket infrastructure. Additionally, CA aims to achieve at least 40% female representation in key cricket leadership positions.
The plan emphasizes showcasing women’s cricket at premier venues. A historic Women’s Ashes Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is scheduled for early next year, coinciding with the 90th anniversary of women’s Test cricket. The multi-format Ashes series will also include T20 Internationals at Adelaide Oval and the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Australian cricket icon Ellyse Perry expressed strong support for the initiatives. Perry commended CA’s commitment to women’s cricket and highlighted the plan’s potential to inspire future generations.
“This plan will continue to drive growth so that women’s cricket continues to thrive,” Perry said in a CA statement.
