Conor McGregor is making headlines as he won $1.6 million by betting on Nate Diaz. The former UFC champion placed a $500,000 bet on Diaz to defeat Jorge Masvidal in their boxing match. Diaz and Masvidal already had a history as they first encountered each other in a MMA bout back in 2019, where “Gamebred” emerged victorious after the fight was stopped by the doctor due to severe injury cuts on Diaz.
McGregor won a hefty amount
Before the boxing match, McGregor confidently announced his big bet, in which he backed his former UFC opponent Diaz to the win. “The Notorious” shared his bet on social media, stating that range, form, experience, only hands being used, he can’t see Masvidal causing any trouble to Nate in the boxing ring. McGregor’s confidence bore fruit as ““The Stockton Slugger” won the fight via majority decision. The victory gave Diaz a chance to avenge his UFC loss, while McGregor got a massive return of $1,625,000.
McGregor posted many tweets celebrating his successful bet on Nate. He wrote, “The rich get richer, well done Nate, congratulations.” He also shared his plans for the win and tweeted, “Yacht fuel.” The Irishman also reposted a video of Diaz reacting to the bet, stating, “I make you so much money you can swim in it.”
McGregor and Diaz have a storied history in UFC
Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz have a great history in the UFC, with Nate defeating McGregor in 2016 via submission and a few months later, “The Notorious” won the rematch. This time, it was Diaz’s turn to avenge his UFC 244 loss against Masvidal, which he succeeded in doing.
Diaz and McGregor have had a friendly relationship in recent years. Nate was one of the defenders when McGregor withdrew from UFC 303. The Irishman recently suffered a toe injury that forced him to withdraw from the highly anticipated main-event bout against Michael Chandler. This drew a lot of criticism toward him. The situation was made worse by the secrecy surrounding the status of the main event, especially when a press conference was canceled due to McGregor’s absence on June 3 in Dublin. Just 10 days later, it was announced by the UFC that the bout was canceled.
