Conor McGregor recently made a revelation about the financial stakes behind his canceled UFC 303 fight with Michael Chandler, explaining why “Iron” is so eager to reschedule the fight. The highly anticipated clash was supposed to headline UFC 303 on June 30, but the Irishman withdrew due to suffering a toe injury during his training. Now, in place of the McGregor-Chandler showdown, MMA fans will get to see a rematch between Alex Pereira and Jiri Prochazka for the light heavyweight title.
Despite his injury, “The Notorious” is optimistic about returning to the UFC octagon soon. However, he has not committed to rebooking the fight with Chandler. This uncertainty has sparked debate over Chandler’s decision to wait for a potential payout.
McGregor reveals Chandler’s payout for their fight
McGregor took to social media and explained Chandler’s persistence. According to the former UFC champion, Chandler is likely to earn 10 times more than his usual fight purse for their match. McGregor stated that Michael would need to fight 10 bouts to get what he is getting in this one. He addressed the critics who suggested that Chandler could have fought many more times by now and wrote, “For those who are saying he could have fought 2 or 3 times by now, etc. He would need 10 to break even with this cheque.”
Chandler is determined to fight the Irishman
While the exact figures for Chandler’s typical earnings in the UFC and potential payout for the McGregor bout are still unknown, the financial incentive is clear. McGregor’s previous opponents had a special contract to fight him, which usually included some PPV earnings. Chandler has not publicly pursued other potential opponents and looks determined for the clash against McGregor. Recently, in an interview with Jeremy Piven, he also discussed his financial situation since joining the UFC and said that he makes more money and he necessarily makes more money on paper or in his fights.
