In a move that surprised few, UFC star Conor McGregor has thrown his support behind former President Donald Trump just hours after Trump survived an assassination attempt while campaigning for the 2024 Presidential Election.
Trump was targeted by a “lone wolf” assailant who fired several shots from a distance of approximately 130 meters. One bullet grazed the billionaire’s ear before United States Secret Service agents subdued the attacker and returned fire.
The shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, was fatally shot by Secret Service agents. However, before being neutralized, Crooks managed to kill one person in the crowd and injure another, leading to widespread condemnation, notably from Trump’s rival, President Joe Biden.
Trump and McGregor have a history of mutual admiration. The UFC star has previously referred to the veteran Republican candidate as the “GOAT” of American politics. In the wake of the recent attempt on Trump’s life, McGregor once again voiced his support.
“A 78-year-old multiple billionaire, he should be on a yacht on the Med [Mediterranean] touring golf courses,” McGregor posted on X.com, formerly Twitter. “But he is not. He is in Pennsylvania spitting out bullets! Running for the love of his country! God speed Donald! God bless the United States.”
Michael Chandler who was set to fight Conor McGregor last month but the latter pulled out, also reposted Conor’s tweet with caption: “We stand united in this one.”
In a further tweet, Chandler took a dig at current US president Joe Biden, saying, “Joe said he had an opinion on the matter but didn’t share it and refused to call this an assasination attempt.”
Donald Trump is getting support from all corners of the UFC. Chandler also posted this about Trump, “If @realDonaldTrump played golf this morning after getting shot in the ear and almost killed less than 16 hours prior, can anyone who hates him please loosen their hate a little bit? Nothing deters the man.”
The incident has heightened security concerns as the 2024 Presidential Election campaign intensifies. Authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack and reviewing security protocols to prevent similar incidents.
