Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes appeared on NXT on Tuesday night, where he ran into some familiar friends. He was in NXT to meet the guys and the promotion aired a backstage conversation in which Cody met some former AEW counterparts. “The American Nightmare” was on the show to announce the 25-man Battle Royal for next week’s NXT show. He told Trick Williams, “You might know some of them, but some of them might be from different locker rooms.” The statement hints that Raw or SmackDown stars could appear in the battle royal, as well as a possible crossover appearance from stars of TNA.
Former AEW Stars appeared backstage
Shawn Spears, who is one of Cody’s best friends in real life, first met Cody backstage. He looked at the WWE Championship and said, “You won the Royal Rumble and You got yours. Next week at the Battle Royal, I’ll get mine.”
Then Ethan Page came to Cody and excitedly said that I’m in this too and asked Cody to wish him luck. Then Lexis King walked up and said that the King was going to win the Battle Royal. Lexis used to go by the name Brian Pillman Jr in AEW.
Cody Rhodes then told all three that they were in a good place. His comment was a dig at AEW, as all three stars left or were released by AEW and eventually joined WWE. The comment hinted that everyone is happy after deciding to move from AEW.
Fans believe this was a dig at AEW
Fans reacted to the video on social media and said that this was a shot by WWE and would enrage AEW and Tony Khan to see three of his former wrestlers together on WWE programming and take an indirect dig at AEW. It was a fun moment and one of the things that very few thought they would ever see. Some fans wished to see CM Punk get involved in this as well, but for now, we can only assume that there will be more opportunities like this in the future.
