Clermont vs Strasbourg: Preview
Clermont form analysis
Clermont’s recent form has been mixed, with two wins and two defeats from their last four league matches leaving them 17th in Ligue 1. Their latest outing brought a valuable 2-1 comeback victory away at struggling Nantes, earned thanks to late drama as they scored an 89th minute winner through Jim Allevinah. That built on a home win over Auxerre in mid-December, though it followed back-to-back losses against Rennes and Marseille.
The defeat to Marseille was a tight 2-1 reverse after going behind to early goals, while the 3-1 loss to Rennes saw them throw away a lead as they conceded twice late on. Their general play has been decent, with goals from key individuals like Allevinah and Saîf-Eddine Khaoui driving results, but they have struggled for defensive solidity at times. Conceding late goals has proved costly in turning draws into defeats. Finding greater composure and game management will be crucial if Clermont are to pull away from the relegation battle in the second half of the season. Their attacking quality though, does provide optimism.
Strasbourg form analysis
Strasbourg come into their next match on the back of an impressive four-game unbeaten run in Ligue 1. Their latest outing brought a 1-1 draw away to Marseille, earned thanks to a stoppage time equalizer from Jens Diogo Sebas. That built on a run of three straight league wins, including a vital 2-1 home victory over defending champions Lille. Strasbourg have shown great resilience and fighting spirit to earn late points.
As well as the late leveller at Marseille, they also scored late through Erving Emegha to draw 1-1 away at Brest at the start of this run. This gritty determination has seen them rise to 7th in the table. However they have continued to struggle for attacking fluency at times, with seven of their last eight goals coming after the 80th minute. Finding greater consistency and productivity in their attacking play will be key if they are to maintain their push for European qualification. But in a tight battle for the European spots, Strasbourg’s ability to grind out results could prove decisive. Maintaining their strong home form will be crucial.
