Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers: Preview
Chelsea form analysis
Chelsea’s form over this run of games has been inconsistent. They started with a disappointing 2-1 loss away at Wolves, with Nkunku’s late strike a mere consolation after Lemina and Doherty had put Wolves in control. Chelsea responded with a tight 2-1 home win over Crystal Palace thanks to goals from Mudryk and Madueke, overturning Olise’s equalizer before the break. This momentum continued as Chelsea won 3-2 at Luton in a thriller, with two goals from Palmer and another from Madueke enough to withstand a late Luton fightback.
Hopes of a sustained resurgence were checked however as Chelsea required a Palmer penalty to scrape past Fulham 1-0 at home. Any remaining optimism was swiftly crushed following a 4-1 thrashing away at Liverpool, with Nkunku’s goal failing to paper over the cracks of an outclassed performance. So while Chelsea have shown attacking threat from their new arrivals, glaring defensive issues and overreliance on individuals like Palmer continue holding them back from finding consistent form and results under Mauricio Pochettino.
Wolverhampton Wanderers form analysis
Wolverhampton started this run of games poorly, falling to a 3-0 thrashing away at West Ham with Bowen rounding off an emphatic win after a Kudus brace. However, they responded excellently in their next match, beating Chelsea 2-1 at home thanks to goals from Lemina and Doherty either side of Nkunku’s consolation strike. Building on this momentum, Wolves then went to Brentford and grabbed an impressive 4-1 victory through a Lemina opener and Hwang brace, along with a late goal from Bellegarde.
Continuing their resurgence, Wolves made it three wins in a row after comfortably dispatching Everton 3-0, with goals from Kilman, Cunha and Dawson. Their scoring form dried up in a 0-0 home draw with Brighton next time out, but the solid defensive display maintained their unbeaten run. After an initial heavy defeat at West Ham, Wolves have bounced back tremendously, with successive big wins over Chelsea, Brentford and Everton rekindling hopes of a push for European qualification on the back of their stingy defense and ruthless finishing power.
