Chelsea’s long-serving goalkeeping coach Henrique Hilário has stepped down from his role, paving the way for a reunion with former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel in the England national team setup.
The Portuguese coach is set to join Tuchel’s staff when the German takes over as the Three Lions manager on January 1, 2024.
Chelsea Goalkeeping Coach Henrique Hilário Resigns to Join Thomas Tuchel’s England Team
Hilário, who spent eight years as a Chelsea player and returned in 2016 as part of Antonio Conte’s coaching staff, has become a familiar and respected figure at Stamford Bridge.
As a player, Hilário helped Chelsea to two FA Cup victories and served as a reliable understudy during a golden era for the club. His transition to coaching saw him play a key role in developing Chelsea’s goalkeepers across multiple managerial regimes, including Conte, Tuchel, and most recently, Enzo Maresca.
Speaking last month, Maresca had addressed rumors of Hilário’s potential move, stating there had been no formal approach from the Football Association at the time. However, the Chelsea boss emphasized that he wouldn’t stand in the way of staff seeking new opportunities.
“We’re open-minded when it comes to allowing people to take chances,” Maresca said.
“We’re happy to keep those who want to stay, but for those who wish to move on, we respect their decisions.”
Tuchel, who famously led Chelsea to their second Champions League title in 2021, has already started building his England backroom team. Hilário’s appointment follows the departure of former goalkeeping coach Martyn Margetson, who exited along with Gareth Southgate.
Performance analyst James Melbourne, another ex-Chelsea staff member, has also joined Tuchel’s England project, and English coach Anthony Barry is set to be the German’s assistant.
Hilário’s exit is not expected to leave a significant void at Chelsea, as Maresca’s coaching team includes several other goalkeeping specialists. Michele De Bernardin remains on staff, while assistant coach Willy Caballero, a former Chelsea, Manchester City, and Argentina goalkeeper, offers a wealth of experience.
For Hilário, the move marks a new chapter in a career steeped in footballing excellence. Known for his calm demeanor and ability to connect with players, his expertise will undoubtedly be an asset as Tuchel looks to reshape England’s approach on and off the pitch.
Chelsea, meanwhile, continues to evolve under Maresca, who has brought fresh energy and ideas to the club. While Hilário’s departure ends a significant chapter in the Blues’ history, it underscores the club’s openness to change and its influence on global football.
As Hilário prepares to join the England national team, fans will remember his contributions to Chelsea with fondness, wishing him success in this exciting new role.
