Footballers died on the pitch:
1. Arne Espeel:
Arne Espeel, a 25-year-old goalie for Winkel Sport B, lost his life in a match in the Belgian second provincial league after stopping a penalty against Westrozebeke. The young Belgian goalie had just saved a penalty kick and his team was leading 2-1 in the second half when he passed out.
Espeel immediately slumped after blocking the penalty kick, giving the impression that he was overjoyed. Espeel was declared dead not long after first responders raced to the scene to try to resuscitate him using a defibrillator.
2. Peter Biaksangzuala:
On October 19, 2014, Peter Biaksangzuala passed away from injuries he sustained while flipping over to celebrate winning a match. The defensive midfielder played for Bethlehem Vengthlang FC in the top amateur division of Mizoram, a tiny region in northeastern India. When he died, he was just 23 years old.
In the 62nd minute of the game against Chanmari West FC, Biaksangzuala scored with a header and celebrated by flipping several backflips. After a rough landing, shocked teammates and officials surrounded him. Biaksangzuala was taken urgently to a nearby hospital, where a CT scan revealed a severed spinal cord. After that, he was brought to the ICU, where medical professionals pronounced him dead.
3. Alen Pamic:
Alen Pamić represented NK Istra 1961 as a professional player. The Croatian, who had a history of cardiac issues, unexpectedly passed away on June 21, 2013, while playing indoor football with his friends. It was discovered that his death was caused by coronary artery plaque and hypercholesterolemia.
The condition known as hypercholesterolemia, or high cholesterol, is characterised by elevated blood cholesterol levels. Most cases of hypercholesterolemia result from a confluence of genetic and environmental factors. Environmental factors encompass diet, stress, and weight.
4. Cristian Gomez:
Former Argentinean football player Cristian César Gómez played defender for Sportivo Patria, 9 de Julio de Rafaela, Deportivo Armenio, and Atlético Paraná. During a game in May 2015, he passed away.
He most likely had a heart attack when he collapsed on the field during the game. After receiving prompt medical attention, he was taken to the hospital in an ambulance, where he later died.
5. Marc-Vivien Foé:
Cameroonian professional football player Marc-Vivien Foé was a standout defensive midfielder for both his team and his nation. Foé started his professional career with Canon Yaoundé and later played for Lens, West Ham United, Lyon, and Manchester City in the Premier League and Ligue 1. The entire football community was shocked by Foé’s sudden death on June 26, 2003, while participating for Cameroon in an international match.
Ultimately, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy was found to be the cause of death. The cause of this disorder is unclear, but it thickens the heart. The most commonly affected areas of the heart are the ventricles and the interventricular septum.
6. Piermario Morosini:
Italian football player Piermario Morosini was a standout midfielder in his career. Morosini died unexpectedly on April 14, 2012, while playing for Livorno against Pescara due to a fatal cardiac arrest.
In the 31st minute of the Serie B match, he passed out. He fell to the ground and struggled to stand up, but he passed out and was given medical attention on the spot. Morosini was placed on a stretcher while conscious, and a defibrillator was used on him. He was rushed to the Santo Spirito hospital, but according to later reports, he died en route.
7. Miklós Fehér:
Striker Miklós Fehér competed professionally for both club and nation. On January 25, 2004, while Benfica was playing Vitória de Guimarães, he died of a cardiac arrest. Fehér had just entered the game as a substitute and set up the only goal with a player right off the bench.
However, Fehér instantly bent forward and seemed to be in pain after being given a yellow card during stoppage time before collapsing back to the ground. He was transported to the hospital via an ambulance that arrived on the scene and started cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. He passed away before midnight, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy-caused cardiac arrhythmia was determined to be the cause.
8. Akli Fairuz:
Akli Fairuz needed emergency medical attention on the pitch after suffering a fatal injury in a horrifying challenge during an Indonesian Premier League match. As they battled for the ball in the penalty area, Agus Rahman, the custodian for PSAP Sigli, kicked Akli Fairuz of Persiraja in the torso, causing injuries.
After the tackle, players got angry and started fighting on the pitch, forcing security to eject the referee. Frontman Fairuz was substituted, but he was able to watch the rest of the game from the sidelines. But later, the striker’s condition worsened and he required hospitalisation. It was found very quickly that Fairus was experiencing bladder leakage. He passed away from his internal injuries a few days after the match.
9. Phil O’Donnell:
Midfielder Philip O’Donnell, a Scottish native, was a member of the Sheffield Wednesday, Motherwell, and Celtic teams. He suffered a cardiac arrest on December 29, 2007, while representing Motherwell against Dundee United, and died at the age of 35. O’Donnell passed out during a game against Dundee United just as he was about to be replaced.
He was treated on the pitch for about five minutes by Motherwell and Dundee United club medics before being taken by ambulance to Wishaw General Hospital. Regretfully, he was pronounced deceased at 17:18. According to the results of a postmortem performed on January 1, 2008, he died of left ventricular failure.
10. Cristiano Júnior:
Cristiano Sebastião de Lima Júnior, a forward for Dempo and a native of Brazil, passed away in the Federation Cup finals after colliding with the opposing team’s goalie on the field. During the Federation Cup finals, Júnior and Mohun Bagan goalie Subrata Pal collided in the 78th minute.
After following the ball into the box to score his second goal, he crashed into the keeper, stumbled out of the goal, and eventually passed out. They tried everything to revive him, but it was not possible. The game continued after Júnior was taken off the field, and by the time he arrived at Hosmat Hospital, he had already passed away. The autopsy performed at Bangalore Hospital revealed that the football player died from a heart attack.
11. Gregory Mertens:
Gregory Mertens, 24, a defender for Sporting Lokeren, passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2015, just a few days after he suffered a head injury while competing for the team’s reserve squad against Racing Genk. On Monday, April 27, during the game against Racing Genk, he suffered from heart failure. The defender was treated on the pitch prior to being taken to the hospital. At roughly 16:30 on April 30, 2015, he was pronounced deceased.
12. Matt Gadsby:
Matthew Gadsby is an English professional football player who has played for Walsall, Mansfield Town, Kidderminster Harriers, Forest Green, and Hinckley United. He specialised in midfield and defence. Gadsby passed out on the field on September 9, 2006, while playing for Hinckley United against Harrogate Town in a Conference North game.
Despite the best efforts of paramedics to save him, he passed away in Harrogate District Hospital three days after turning 27. Medical testing revealed that Gadsby had arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, a genetic disorder that weakens the heart’s right ventricle muscle.
13. Tommy Blackstock:
A defender for Leith Athletic, Cowdenbeath, Blue Bell, Raith Rovers, Manchester United, and Dunniker Rangers, Thomas Blackstock was a Scot. On April 8, 1907, while playing for Manchester United against St Helens, he died on the pitch. He had fallen while heading the ball, suffering from a head injury.
14. Serginho:
Serginho, whose real name was Paulo Sérgio Oliveira da Silva, was a Brazilian football player who was a defence player for São Caetano. On October 27, 2004, after playing for sixty minutes against São Paulo, he suffered a cardiac arrest. Serginho’s heart weighed 600 grammes and was twice the size of an average human heart, according to a later autopsy.
15. Andres Balanta:
Colombian football player Andrés Felipe Balanta Cifuentes played as a defensive midfielder for Deportivo Cali and Atlético Tucumán. Lucas Pusineri, the technical director, has asked to join Atlético Tucumán in June 2022 on loan from Deportivo Cali, with the option to buy the position, after it expires in June 2023.
It was his first time performing overseas. But he did not live to witness this, as on November 29, 2022, while exercising, Balanta went into cardiorespiratory arrest and died. After 40 minutes of fruitless attempts at resuscitation, the patient was pronounced dead by the medical staff.
