Legendary cricketer Chaminda Vaas of Sri Lanka believes that India should not rely solely on their star batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for important tournaments like the Asia Cup and World Cup. Numerous other young players may serve as a “trump card.” India will compete in the Asia Cup beginning on August 31 before hosting the ICC Men’s World Cup beginning on October 5. Chaminda Vaas Talks About India’s Young Trump Cards
Chaminda told ANI,
“If you talk about the Indian team, there are so many young cricketers who are trump cards, like Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav, not just Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. There are many talented people in India, like Yashasvi (Yashasvi Jaiswal) and Gill. Everyone will be aggressively competitive. When it comes to batting, I believe India doesn’t always rely on Virat and Rohit; other players have also contributed, and if they play well, India will win most of the time.”
The Colombo Strikers club in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) bowling coach Chaminda also discussed the importance of Jasprit Bumrah in the squad and claimed that if he gets well, India will benefit much in the World Cup. Bumrah, who has been out of commission since September 2022, is nearing the end of his recovery process.
The former Sri Lankan cricketer continued,
“It wouldn’t be simple. But Jasprit Bumrah is one of the best bowlers in the world; based on his past performances, we can say he is a very reliable player. India is genuinely interested in hiring him. However, it can also occur after recovery from an accident. I am confident that the trainer and physiotherapist are working together to help him get healthy. India will benefit much from having him fit for the World Cup.”
When questioned about his favorites in the Asia Cup, Chaminda said that he is sure that Sri Lanka is also looking to defend the championship. He also mentioned that Sri Lanka would be trying their best for Asia Cup. The other teams, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India, all have strong players and have been doing admirably. The team has a different approach, especially while playing in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. It is very hard to predict anything.
The team might score 320 to 350 runs in a 50-over style. Chaminda Vaas believes they should be able to defend those runs, which may help them win the World Cup.
