‘Monday’ brought many surprises & heartbreaks for Indian cricket fans as Rohit Sharma & Ajit Agarkar announced India’s Squad for Asia Cup 2023. The most shocking snub in India’s Asia Cup 2023 squad is the omission of Yuzvendra Chahal. The exclusion has resulted in heartbreak for experienced Chahal who has time & again proved his prowess by performing well in ODIs & IPL format.
After the announcement of India’s Asia Cup 2023 Squad, Yuzvendra Chahal took to Twitter to express his disappointment. Chahal tweeted two emojis one depicting a sun behind a cloud & the other showing a sun shining. The tweet gave a clear message that though Chahal is currently having a tough time, good & bright days will come again in his life.

This tweet evokes a strong reaction from fans who recalled the tweet from Rohit Sharma in 2018 where he tweeted that the Sun will rise again tomorrow after he didn’t find a regular spot in Test Squad. The message is an indication of hope, resilience, and a reminder that setbacks are just stepping stones to future success.
Why Kuldeep Yadav has been chosen over Yuzvendra Chahal in the Asia Cup squad?
The exclusion of Yuzvendra Chahal from the Asia Cup 2023 squad was surprising for fans & resulted in intense discussions. They thought that an experienced player like Chahal who is a leading wicket-taker in T20Is & IPL & a proven bowler in ODIs should have cut into the announced squad. But the Chairman of the Selection Committee made it clear that the decision has been taken meticulously by measuring the performances of both Chahal & Kuldeep.
As per Agarkar’s statement, the selection committee faced a huge dilemma when choosing between Chahal & Kuldeep Yadav the top two wrist spinners of the Indian team. However, the votes went in favor of Kuldeep who has displayed exceptional performances recently in the ODI format & has an upper hand in the format than Chahal.
He further said that though Chahal is an exceptional performer, they had to consider the overall balance of the team. And accommodating two wrist spinners in the squad would have posed challenges for the team thus Chahal has been excluded from the squad.
As per the 2023 stats of both Chahal & Kuldeep, Chahal has scalped nine wickets in Nine T20Is. On the other hand, Kuldeep has scalped seven wickets in three fixtures with his best figures being 4-6 & eight wickets in seven t20is with the best figures being 3-28. The stats made it clear why Kuldeep Yadav was selected instead of Yuzvendra Chahal in Asia Cup 2023 Squad.
An Overview of the Selection Committee’s Strategy
The omission of Yuzvendra Chahal from the Asia Cup 2023 Squad provides a glimpse of the Indian Selection Committee’s strategy of naming a balanced squad. The announced squad is not only focused on Asia Cup 2023 but also considers the upcoming challenges & tournaments including World Cup 2023.
Rohit Sharma also emphasized the fact that opportunities will be available for Ravi Ashwin, Chahal, and Sundar to make it to the World Cup 2023 Squad & doors are not closed for any of them.
The exclusion of Yuzvendra Chahal from India’s Asia Cup Squad indicated fierce competition in the Indian team setup. With an abundance of talent & depth in every department, it’s not easy to make a selection. It further depicts the team’s adaptability & willingness to experiment with differnet combinations & form a lineup that can produce desirable results.
A few months back, R Ashwin too was left out of the announced WTC 2023 Final squad with Axar coming in. The result was that India lost the finals & returned without WTC mace for the second consecutive time. Fans hope that history doesn’t repeat itself & Yuzvendra Chahal’s exclusion doesn’t prove costly for the Indian team who is gearing up for ODI World Cup 2023.
We hope that the sun soon rises for Yuzvendra Chahal who haven’t got a chance to play in the T20 World Cup 2021, 2022 & now in Asia Cup 2023 despite being a regular performer in the limited overs format.
