UFC veteran Chael Sonnen recently made big claims about Conor McGregor. Sonnen said that the UFC superstar is undergoing treatment for substance abuse. This rehab allegation is the latest speculation after “The Notorious” withdrew from his highly-anticipated comeback fight against Michael Chandler at UFC 303. Sonnen made the allegations about McGregor during his ‘Good Guy/Bad Guy’ show with Daniel Cormier on Monday. “The American Gangster” questioned McGregor’s claim that injury was the reason he withdrew from his fight against Chandler. While discussing McGregor and Chandler’s promotion of alcohol products, Sonnen hinted that one of them was in rehab for substance abuse.
Sonnen’s claims about McGregor
“It’s so ironic that both sides have these massive interests in alcohol, and one side is in the middle of rehab for substance abuse, including alcohol,” said Sonnen. He further hinted about the Irishman’s Proper No. 12 whiskey. Cormier claimed he didn’t hear the comment, prompting Sonnen to give more hints. “I’ll see you in a proper time, because I’m in a proper facility right now that doesn’t let me drink alcohol,” said Sonnen.
Earlier in the show, Sonnen said that people who are close to McGregor have sworn to secrecy about the real reason for his withdrawal from the fight, expressing reluctance to support the injury story.
McGregor’s representative, Karen Kessler, strongly denied Sonnen’s claims. He told TMZ Sports that the fight was canceled because McGregor suffered an injury during training.
Chandler expressed his disappointment at the bout cancellation
The cancellation has raised questions about the severity of McGregor’s injury, the details of which are still unclear. Chandler recently expressed his disappointment in a video, expressing his sadness at the fight’s cancellation. “Iron” also expressed his uncertainty about the mega-fight coming to fruition. Now he just has to wait for a new date to fight McGregor.
The former UFC champion’s social media activity has continued recently, though it is uncertain whether these posts are from him directly or his team. Nevertheless, McGregor’s representative has categorically denied any substance abuse issues and called Sonnen’s allegations baseless.
